An original tour of Japanese art, history, architecture and culture. We’ll not only explore Japanese arts and crafts, but also the food, scenic mountain towns, premier castle, traditional inn and optional hot spring visit. This 7 day tour will begin where traditional meets contemporary arts at the Nezu Museum in Tokyo. That afternoon, you’ll have an option to visit the Japanese Folk Art Museum or the d47 Museum. The following day, we’ll take a bullet train to the mountain town of Nagano for a unique experience of zen culture, temples and the refined vegetarian cuisine of Japan called shojin ryori. In the city of Matsumoto, we’ll tour one of Japan’s finest castles, visit museums and take hands-on art classes. Take a day trip to the meticulously preserved post town of Naraijuku along the Nakasendo trail to shop and experience Edo era architecture and lacquerware. We’ll then head back to Tokyo to visit Asakusa, the “low town”, for shopping, sightseeing and entertainment near the popular Sensoji Temple before heading back home. (OR join our extended tour to Kyoto)

Before You Go

  1. Japan is a country where walking is required. Bring comfortable shoes and expect to do a fair amount of walking including climbing up and down staircases.
  2. Pack light as we will be traveling from town to town on trains and buses. We recommend one good quality suitcase that you can lift/carry that has wheels and a backpack or a small bag.
  3. On some nights, you will be staying in a traditional Japanese Ryokan. While it is a quintessential experience of Japan, it does involve sleeping on tatami mats and using shared bathrooms, which is very different from sleeping on western style beds.
  4. While in Japan, we would like our guests to experience the local cuisines. On many occasions guests will have options, however on some occasion meals are prix fixe. The meals may contain fish, gluten, soy sauce or unfamiliar ingredients to travelers. Please keep an open mind and enjoy the experience. If you have severe food allergies or any concerns, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate your needs.

This trip is based on double-occupancy and there will be additional charge for single-occupancy.

Itinerary is subject to change due to availability and weather.
